Summary
Manchester City smashed Burnley 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side, who played with 10 men for most of the first half after an early red card, extended their unbeaten run against the Clarets to 14 games and moved up to 4th with 10 points.
Erling Haaland’s late double wrapped up the win, while Burnley, under Scott Parker, showed early spirit but slumped to their 4th defeat in 6 games and are just above the relegation zone with 4 points. The win showed City’s depth and resilience with a man down.
Goals
Manchester City took the lead in the 12th minute when Maxime Estève scored an own goal, poking the rebound into his own net under pressure from Phil Foden after Jeremy Doku’s shot was saved by Martin Dúbravka. Burnley equalised in the 38th minute when Jaidon Anthony slotted home a low cross from Quilindschy Hartman, with the ball deflecting off Rúben Dias. City regained control in the 60th minute when Matheus Nunes volleyed in from an Oscar Bobb flick-on. Four minutes later Maxime Estève scored another own goal, deflecting Nunes’ cross past Dúbravka. Erling Haaland finished the game off in the 89th minute with a clinical finish, assisted by Doku, and then tapped in a stoppage time goal in the 90+3rd for his 8th of the season.
Player of the Match
Erling Haaland was Player of the Match for his two late goals. The Norwegian striker’s movement and finishing won the game for City and showed he’s in form even when he’s not getting much service.City started well but were down to 10 men when Joško Gvardiol was sent off in the 20th minute for a foul on Lyle Foster, and Burnley grew in confidence.
Foster’s overhead kick went wide but Gianluigi Donnarumma made saves to keep City in it. After the break Nunes and Doku took control, Burnley’s defence was overwhelmed. Nico O’Reilly’s deflected shot and Savinho’s runs caused chaos, while Ethan Wheatley missed a great chance for Burnley. Sub Oscar Bobb sparked the third goal and City’s 68% possession paid off. Scott Parker praised his team’s spirit but Guardiola called it a “statement of character”. This win sets City up for their Champions League trip to Monaco.
