Summary

Goals
Tottenham took the lead in the 5th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur smashed a half volley in from a headed pass from Micky van de Ven after a nice move. Aston Villa equalised in the 37th minute with a stunning long range shot from Morgan Rogers who arrowed a dipping shot past Guglielmo Vicario for his first goal of the season. The winner came in the 77th minute when substitute Emiliano Buendía curled a low shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner to seal the win for Villa.
Player of the Match
Matty Cash was Player of the Match for his non stop running at right back and his role in the build up to Buendía’s winner. His overlapping and defending earned him an 8/10 rating, even better than Rogers’s goal.Tottenham started well with Mohammed Kudus having a goal disallowed for offside shortly after Bentancur’s goal. Villa grew into the game and Rogers’s goal changed the momentum.
In the second half Spurs had chances with Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons testing Emiliano Martínez but Villa’s subs including Buendía and Ollie Watkins proved the difference. Cristian Romero was injured in the warm up so Kevin Danso started and van de Ven took the armband.
Villa’s 6.91 xG as per the sports card above was much higher than their shot count and Spurs’ 8.61 xG showed how wasteful they were. Emery praised Villa’s clinicalness and Frank complained about defensive mistakes. Tottenham now have Monaco in the Champions League and Villa have Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League.
