Roque joined Barcelona last summer in a deal potentially worth up to €61 million, starting with an initial €30 million and up to €31 million in add-ons. However, after completing his transfer to the club in January, he only managed 353 minutes on the pitch across 16 appearances in all competitions.
The 19-year-old’s agent had previously expressed frustration over his limited playing time, threatening to seek a permanent transfer if Roque didn’t get more opportunities this season. Although there were transfer offers, Roque ultimately chose to move to Betis, possibly making the move permanent in the future.
Barcelona has confirmed that Roque will join Betis on a season-long loan, with an option to extend it for the 2025/26 season and a potential permanent transfer. According to AS, Betis can buy Roque for €25 million (£21.2 million), and Barcelona has reportedly included a buy-back clause slightly above that amount.
Roque wasn’t included in Barcelona’s La Liga squad for this season and missed the first two games under Flick. The club is eager to sell the 19-year-old as they continue to raise funds.
Roque has reportedly expressed a preference to join Betis rather than Portuguese side Sporting CP, who were pursuing a permanent transfer. Premier League club Everton was also interested in him.
For Barcelona, Roque’s departure brings the club closer to registering new signing Dani Olmo. However, reports indicate that more sales are needed before the €60m midfielder can take the field.
