Huddersfield 0-2 Man City: Goals and Highlights
Summary
Man City won 2-0 at Huddersfield Town in the EFL Carabao Cup third round at the John Smith’s Stadium. Pep Guardiola made nine changes from the Premier League draw and City were professional in their win against the League One side.
Phil Foden was the star with a goal and assist as City had 75% of the possession and kept a clean sheet. Huddersfield under Michael Duff showed spirit but couldn’t break through, their wait for a fourth round appearance since 1999-2000 continues.
Goals
Man City took the lead in the 18th minute when Phil Foden played a clever one-two with debutant Divine Mukasa on the edge of the box and then drilled a left footed shot into the bottom right corner past Lee Nicholls. The second came in the 74th minute when Foden turned provider, played a pass to Savinho on the left and he thrashed a rising effort off the underside of the crossbar and in. Huddersfield nearly pulled one back late when Cameron Ashia’s curling shot hit the post but James Trafford was untested.
Player of the Match
Phil Foden was Player of the Match for his goal, assist and all round performance as a deep-lying forward. He created three chances, won four duels and looked back to his best, Guardiola was happy with him in the No. 10 role.
Match Highlights
Man City had six academy players in the team, including Divine Mukasa’s senior debut and Kalvin Phillips’s first game since December 2023. They dominated the game but lacked cutting edge early on, Nico O’Reilly was denied by Lee Nicholls after a run through in the 53rd minute. Huddersfield had their moments, Zepiqueno Redmond volleyed over and Ben Wiles flashed wide just before half time.
Subs Tijjani Reijnders and Jaden Heskey (son of Emile) brought some energy, while John Stones and Nathan Ake were solid at the back. The hosts had a late rally, including corners conceded by Rico Lewis, but it came to nothing. This win shows Man City’s depth before the Premier League trip to Swansea, Huddersfield can be proud of their spirit.
