Goals
Liverpool scored in the 4th minute when Mohamed Salah’s low free-kick deflected off Andrew Robertson past Jan Oblak for 1-0. Two minutes later Salah made it 2-0 with a one-two with Ryan Gravenberch in the 6th minute.
Atletico pulled one back just before halftime in the 45+3rd minute with Marcos Llorente poking in a deflected effort off Ibrahima Konaté. Llorente equalized in the 81st minute with a stunning volley from a rebound. But Virgil van Dijk won it in the 90+2nd minute with a header from a Dominik Szoboszlai corner for a 3-2 win.
Player of the Match
Virgil van Dijk was Player of the Match for his stoppage time winner and solid defending. The Liverpool captain’s header sent the fans wild and showed his big game mentality.Liverpool had 55.8% of the ball in the first half but Atletico’s counter attacks, led by Antoine Griezmann, kept them in the game.
A VAR checked penalty for Liverpool was overturned and Alexander Isak’s first start saw a shot saved by Jan Oblak. Sub Rio Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest ever European player, breaking a record.
Llorente was excellent for Atletico but their defence crumbled late. Alisson Becker made a crucial save from Alexander Sørloth to keep the lead. This win will give Liverpool momentum and Atletico have a lot to regroup for their next game.
