Key Performances
Ekitike impressed on his Premier League debut, scoring and assisting, while Chiesa’s impact off the bench was the difference. Semenyo’s two goals earned him plaudits despite the loss, but the match was marred by a 30th-minute stoppage after he reported racist abuse from the crowd. The Premier League will investigate.

The game had an emotional edge to it. Anfield paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died in a car crash earlier that summer. A 20th-minute applause and Jota’s No. 20 displayed in the stands added to the win.
