In Wednesday’s Champions League clash, Ciro Immobile came through for Lazio, netting a 69th-minute penalty to secure a 1-0 win over 10-man Bayern Munich at home.
The penalty was awarded after Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano made a mistimed challenge on Gustav Isaksen in the box, resulting in the French defender being shown a straight red card.
Lazio maintained a disciplined defense, frustrating Bayern’s attempts to attack, with the German side failing to register a single shot on target throughout the match.
Bayern, who entered the game as favorites, were eager to bounce back from their recent 3-0 Bundesliga defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, but instead, they find themselves under more scrutiny after suffering their second consecutive loss without finding the net.
Initially, Bayern looked threatening, creating early opportunities for Joshua Kimmich and Harry Kane, albeit narrowly missing the mark.
However, Lazio responded with their own chances, including a powerful strike from Luis Alberto that narrowly missed the target.
As the game progressed, Bayern struggled to break through Lazio’s organized defense, and their frustration grew evident with Jamal Musiala’s close-range effort sailing over the bar.
Lazio had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half when Isaksen found himself one-on-one with Neuer, but the Bayern keeper stood firm to deny him.
The decisive moment came when Immobile set up Isaksen in the box, only for Upamecano to arrive late and clumsily step on his ankle, resulting in a penalty.
Immobile calmly converted from the spot, sending Neuer the wrong way and giving Lazio the crucial advantage heading into the second leg in Munich on March 5th.
